PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Chapter Meetings with Programs/Speakers:
Monthly meetings are held on the second Sunday of the month (with one or two exceptions) throughout the year. The meeting format includes a presentation by a master clinician on topics such as psychotherapeutic methods and theory, substance abuse counseling, marketing your private practice, dealing with managed care, family therapy, effective couples communication, use of dreams in therapy, art and drama therapy, etc. Programs are free to members. CEUs are available for a nominal fee. Click on the "chapter events" section for meeting and program information.
The SFCAMFT Newsletter:
The Newsletter contains Chapter news and views, professional articles, a calendar of Chapter events, and updates on current professional concerns. Members are eligible for reduced fee classified advertising and may submit articles of interest for publication in the Newsletter. The Newsletter is mailed out every two months to the entire membership.
The SFCAMFT Website and E-list Server:
The SFCAMFT website provides an electronic Internet link to the Chapter and to the professional community. Members can join and renew their membership online, as well as have a listing in the online and paper directory of chapter members. The website also includes listings for Chapter events and information about our Speakers' Bureau and our Referral Service. It provides information about obtaining mailing labels and advertising in our newsletter. There are also links to other websites relevant to the practice of Marriage and Family Therapy. See below for further information about all these services.
SFCAMFT also has a listserv ("e-list") so members can communicate with each other by posting messages to the list that are then visible to all participants on the list. The types of information circulated on the list include announcements of groups and workshops, office space available or needed, referrals for therapists in other areas, and other non-clinical, practical information. Please note there are restrictions on the type of messages that can be posted to the list.
Pre-Licensed Member Services:
Support is available for pre-licensed members. The Chapter will provide help in finding qualified internships, mentors, and supervisors. An Intern Support meeting is held following the regular Chapter meeting in the even-numbered months. Click on "Chapter Events" for meeting and contact information.
The Phone Tree
Volunteers update SFCAMFT members by phone regularly on legislative and legal issues, as well as chapter events and information.
Special Conference/Programs:
Special programs or conferences are held locally by the SFCAMFT Chapter and by CAMFT on a state-wide basis. Belonging to State CAMFT allows you to receive substantial discounts on conferences and workshops. Belonging to your local SFCAMFT Chapter provides opportunities to meet other professionals who are also interested in expanding their professional knowledge base and exploring the complex issues faced by MFTs today.
Consultation/Study Groups:
Peer consultation/study groups may be organized around specific populations, problems, or clinical orientations.
NETWORKING
Chapter Meetings:
The monthly meetings provide an excellent opportunity to network with peers, introduce yourself and describe your practice, trade business cards, distribute flyers, and expand your professional referral base. Some meetings are specifically designed as networking functions, such as the Annual Dinner and the annual Intern Meeting, which focuses specifically on issues related to pre-licensed members.
Fun Lunches and Other Casual Events:
Monthly luncheons at local restaurants and occasional potluck dinners held in members’ homes provide an opportunity to network personally and professionally.
Mailing Labels, Advertising, and Classified Ads:
Members of the Chapter and other professionals in the community are able to buy chapter member mailing lists/labels and advertise in the Newsletter. Click on the "advertising & mailing list labels" for further information.
PRACTICE BUILDING
Therapist Directory - Mailed Copy and Online Database:
The SFCAMFT Therapist Directory includes listings of members' clinical specialties, theoretical orientations, office location, and groups. Approximately 3,000 copies are distributed by mail annually to Bay Area agencies, schools, and local MFTs. An online searchable database of participating clinical members is available to prospective clients who access the SFCAMFT website. Starting in 2008, all licensed (clinical and intern) members of SFCAMFT will be published in the directory at no additional cost.
The SFCAMFT Referral Service (est. 1980)
Potential clients respond to the Chapter Referral Service's advertisements. The Referral Service intake person refers clients to licensed clinical members who have met the Chapter requirements for joining and have paid an annual fee. SFCAMFT Chapter members are eligible for the Referral Service after two years of service to the Chapter. Please contact the Board or Referral Service liaison for information and/or an application.
